XCU: The Next Generation of Camera Base Stations Application Note

With the 3G transmission systems—introduced in 2011/12—Grass Valley® offered the most powerful and flexible camera signal transmission solutions available at the time. The integration of 3G triax and 3G fiber into one single transmission solution solved many of the previous problems with camera signal transmissions. Independent from the cable type being used, any 1.5G and 3G production format became fully supported with the same feature set and with the same functionality. With the unique 3G Twin base station and the 3G field converter boxes, any mix of cables between the cameras and the base stations can be used—without any limitations.

At NAB 2013, Grass Valley introduced the XCU™ eXchangeable control unit (patent pending) in many different versions as the next generation of camera base stations that provide 3G transmission solutions.

This Application Note describes the development process, and focuses on how users can be assured that the unique cradle concept will survive under any practical circumstances.
