Dictionary of Technical Terms - W
wavelength division multiplexing (WDM)
In telecommunications, a means of increasing the information-carrying capacity of an optical fiber by simultaneously transmitting different wavelengths.wavelength of peak radiant intensity
In telecommunications, the wavelength at which the spectral distribution of radiant intensity is at maximum. GVG system for short-haul fiber optic transmission of video, audio, and data. Correction factor applied. See waveform monitor.white bar (white level, reference white)
See video gain. See color balance. A circuit that clips off any signal above a specified video level.white level (white bar, reference white)
See video gain. The maximum excursion of the video signal in the white direction at the time of observation. Capable of passing a broad range of frequencies. See wide bandwidth. 1. Video containing information or allowing information entry, keyed into the video monitor output for viewing on the monitor CRT. A window dub is a copy of a videotape with time code numbers keyed into the picture. 2. A video test signal consisting of a pulse and bar. When viewed on a monitor, the window signal produces a large white square in the center of the picture. 4. A graphical user interface that presents icons and tools for manipulating a software application. Most applications have multiple windows that serve different purposes. A transition between two video signals that takes the shape of a geometric pattern. An electronic device that produces video wipe transition control signals. May be a standalone device or part of a production switcher. A wipe pattern control signal whose voltage mathematically represents a three-dimensional geometric shape. The shape of the wipe solid varies depending on the wipe pattern being generated. For example, a circle pattern is generated from a cone-shaped wipe solid. We've recently redesigned our website so your bookmarked links may no longer work.
