TVB Selects Thomson for Digital Terrestrial Television Deployment in Hong Kong

 

Paris, France/Hong Kong, March 6, 2008Thomson (Euronext 18453; NYSE; TMS) today announced that leading Hong Kong-based broadcaster, Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB), has selected Thomson's Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) solutions for its deployment in Hong Kong for the MFN and SFN networks.

TVB's DTT system is a turnkey video head-end system which includes compression, multiplexing, and electronic program guide (EPG) management for the transmission of standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD) video using both MPEG-2 and H.264 standards. Equipped with ViBE SD and HD encoders, NetProcessor™ 9030 MPEG video processors for hybrid statistical multiplexing, Jade EPG servers, and XMS management system, TVB will be able to leverage their unique dynamic service plan management capabilities to seamlessly remove and add channels within their service plan.

Established in 1967 with a staff of 200, TVB was the first terrestrial free-to-air commercial television broadcaster in Hong Kong. The company has now grown in size with a staff of approximately 4,500 and transmits over 16,000 hours of programming on its Chinese Jade channel and English Pearl channel to 2.29 million homes in Hong Kong. It is also one of the largest producer of Chinese language programming in the world.

This agreement with TVB increases Thomson's presence in the fast-growing television and broadcast market in Asia, and confirms Thomson's leading position in within DTT installation segment.
