South Korea's Newest Cable TV Provider Gets Off The Ground with Grass Valley HD File-based Technologies

Amsterdam, The Netherlands (IBC — Stand 1.D11), September 08, 2011 — South Korea's newest cable TV provider, jTBC, has purchased a full complement of high-definition production and master control technologies from Grass Valley™ for a new file-based production and playout facility in Seoul. The new cable TV provider offers live news, entertainment, sports, and drama programming to subscribers throughout the country.

To support the massive project—which was begun more than a year ago and was granted a government license to operate in April—jTBC ordered several K2 Summit™ production clients and K2 Dyno replay controllers configured in a storage area network (SAN) for its ingest activities and studio production, a K2 Dyno™ Elite Replay System for an upgraded OB van that covers live sports and entertainment events, a Trinix™ NXT and Concerto™ Series video routers to distribute signals throughout the new facility, and more than 40 seats of EDIUS® multiformat nonlinear editing for content creation, where editors will leverage the SAN to develop fast turnaround projects.

"We chose Grass Valley for this project because we felt no other vendor could support the entire project, from ingest to air, as well as Grass Valley," said JI Yongdal, Managing Director of jTBC. "We now have a flexible, file-based system that can handle all types of content in a very stable and reliable way. We evaluated lots of products, and in the end we all felt Grass Valley offered the best value and performance in the marketplace."

The project was supervised by local system integrator SAMA and SK C&C with help from local Grass Valley system engineers. It includes a multi-year Service Level Agreement with Grass Valley to ensure 24/7 systems operation.

"Grass Valley sees the Korean market as very important to its sustained growth, and supporting the jTBC project is a great step towards our goals for the region," said Jeff Rosica, Executive Vice President of Grass Valley. "After jTBC decided go with Grass Valley, several other broadcasters in the region began discussions with our sales team about building new facilities or upgrading facilities. The success we've had deploying a file-based production environment at jTBC is a good example of what Grass Valley can accomplish on the local level, and we believe that will lead to new business no matter what region of the world."

jTBC, a division of JoongAng Ilbo Corp., and owners of several broadcast properties, as well as the Joong Ang Newspaper Company, is scheduled to go on-air in January 2012.
