Amsterdam, The Netherlands (IBC2012—Stand 1.D11), September 07, 2012 — The Special Broadcasting Service Corporation (SBS), Australia's multicultural public service broadcaster, has purchased a new fully equipped high-definition (HD) Kayenne™ Video Production Center switcher from Grass Valley®. The switcher will be used to upgrade its Sydney Production Studio later this year. The switcher will help SBS to produce a wide variety of programs in order to realize the full value of the technology and ensure a fast return on investment.
SBS has operated Grass Valley Kalypso™ standard-definition (SD) Video Production Center switchers for many years, and after detailed market assessment has chosen the Kayenne for its next generation HD studio. The new Kayenne features 4.5 M/Es with 96 inputs and 48 outputs, 6 keyers per M/E channel (30 total), FlexiKey™ programmable clean feed mode, and DoubleTake™ split M/E mode—which increases the number of M/Es to a total of up to 10, all within an 8 RU frame.
"This upgrade is very important to SBS," said John Lock, Capital Development Manager, SBS. "Our new Kayenne switcher gives us the ability to produce our programming in HD with the creative power needed to not only inform our audiences, but to entertain them as well."
The Grass Valley Kayenne HD Video Production Center switcher has become the de facto standard for studio, live sports, and entertainment production around the world. Many Kalypso SD customers have begun upgrading their switchers to the HD version of this popular platform.
"SBS has been a leader in the region with its belief that all Australians, regardless of geography, age, cultural background, or language skills should have access to independent, culturally-relevant Australian media," said Charlie Dunn, Executive Vice President of Products for Grass Valley. "The high-quality programs produced at SBS are in good hands with the Kayenne switcher."
All Kayenne frames include a half-M/E and scale from 1.5 to 2.5 M/Es in compact (4 RU) frames and from 2.5 to 4.5 M/Es in standard (8 RU) frames. This modularity provides multiple panel configuration options. The control panels are ergonomically designed and can be mounted flat or in a banked curve. Each source select and aux bus module has two rows of OLED Source Name Displays that provide ultra-clear text and extremely wide viewing angles. Transition Modules have Enhanced Status Displays using easy to read LEDs.
