When Blue Origin launched New Glenn for the NG-2 mission, most people watching saw a clean, seamless broadcast. What they didn’t see was the unusual way it all came together: a live show spread across the country but controlled from one room in Washington, D.C. And in that room, Grass Valley equipment played a quiet but important role. 

This wasn’t a typical launch production. It was one of the most ambitious REMI setups ever attempted, and it put Broadcast Management Groups’s workflow and the tools inside it through a genuine real-world test. 

What Made This Broadcast Different 

Instead of sending large production teams and trucks to every Blue Origin site, BMG centralized almost everything inside their Network Operations Center. From that room, they handled more than 50 live camera feeds coming from places that couldn’t have been more different from one another: the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, the Mission Control center in Kent, the engine manufacturing floor in Huntsville, the New Shepard facilities in Texas, a scenic beach shot, a barge floating out in the Atlantic, and even cameras bolted onto the booster itself. 

The people running the show weren’t standing anywhere near those cameras. They were miles away in Washington, switching and shading every feed as if it were all happening right outside the building. 

That’s where a stable workflow and reliable hardware mattered. 

Inside BMG’s Control Room 

On launch day, the NOC didn’t feel like a giant broadcast compound or a truck farm. It felt like a focused workspace where everyone already knew the drill. Operators watched the incoming feeds. Graphics and replay teams checked their systems. Communications ran constantly between the NOC and the crews scattered across Blue Origin facilities. 

Almost everything depended on timing and trust. Once the rocket was on the pad, there wasn’t much room for improvisation. The team needed equipment that behaved predictably so the operators could focus on managing the complexity, not wrestling with the tools.

Where Grass Valley Fit Into the Workflow 

BMG used Grass Valley solutions the same way many teams do when the stakes are high: quietly and consistently. 

The Kayenne switcher sat at the center of the production. With dozens of live sources coming in, the switcher needed to be the part of the system no one had to worry about. It was. Every source, every transition, every move through the timeline … it handled the load without drawing attention to itself. 

For a production that required remote shading across more than 50 incoming signals, that consistency mattered. When the NOC team made adjustments, they could trust how the image would respond, which becomes a real advantage when you’re shading a rocket launch from hundreds or thousands of miles away. 

As BMG CEO Todd Mason put it, Grass Valley gear has become “part of the backbone” of their REMI workflow. It’s the part you want to set up, lock in, and not think about again. 

How Everything Came Together on Launch Day 

When the rocket finally lifted off, the room in Washington didn’t erupt or fall silent. People simply leaned in a little closer to their monitors. Some operators watched Cape Canaveral. Others watched the onboard camera. Some focused only on levels and timing. The booster landing added another layer to the moment … the strange feeling of watching a live shot from a barge at sea while sitting in a control room far from the coastline. 

Despite the scale of it all, the broadcast felt steady, which is probably the best compliment a production like this can get. No drama. No scrambling. Just a lot of moving parts behaving the way they were supposed to.

What This Means for Future Live Production 

The New Glenn NG-2 broadcast showed that a nationwide, multi-location, high-pressure event can be produced with a much smaller on-site footprint than we’re all used to. It showed that a centralized NOC and a cloud-based workflow can handle something as complex as a rocket launch. And it showed how important reliable, familiar equipment becomes when everything else in the production is spread out across the map. 

This wasn’t just about proving a technical concept, it was about proving that this way of working is ready for regular use. 

Grass Valley’s role wasn’t the noisy part of the story, but it was a steady part of it. And that steadiness helped BMG pull off a broadcast that felt smooth to the audience, even though it stretched across states, time zones, and a rocket heading into orbit.
