Introduction

“Bring your folks together and communicate with them often.” The guiding principles of Walmart’s co-founder are etched throughout the design and build of the Event Center named in his honor. And with millions of associates based around the globe, Walmart needed a facility that could communicate with everyone.

The brief was simple but ambitious: create a space where collaboration, communication, and culture could flourish at the scale of one of the world’s largest companies. The result is the Sam Walton Hall Event Center; a technologically advanced SMPTE 2110 IP-based production facility that has transformed Walmart’s internal live production and event operations.

Challenge

Walmart needed a production environment capable of supporting live events and global broadcasts across multiple interconnected spaces, while maintaining operational consistency and flexibility

The facility includes a large auditorium, conference center, broadcast studio, radio studio, auxiliary control rooms, and outdoor amphitheater. Every room needed to be interconnected and controllable from multiple locations. At the same time, the system had to meet strict IT security requirements and integrate complex audio workflows

Balancing broadcast performance, enterprise network standards, scalability, and cost efficiency required a fundamental rethink of the original baseband design.

Consistent Control Room Experience

We wanted operators to walk into any control room, sit down, and see the same panel, the same workflow, the same experience. The K-Frame makes that possible.

Solution

Walmart transitioned from a traditional SDI architecture to a SMPTE ST 2110 IP-based infrastructure, significantly reducing cabling requirements while enabling decentralized signal processing across the campus.

Grass Valley K-Frame production switchers were standardized across control rooms to ensure consistent workflows and operator familiarity. The entire system is orchestrated through Grass Valley Orbit, providing centralized control over video, audio, timecode, and metadata routing.

IP gateways and distributed I/O allow signals to move efficiently between venues, while integration with Cisco Nexus switches ensures performance aligned with enterprise network standards.

End Result

Today, Sam Walton Hall supports live productions and corporate broadcasts delivered globally via digital platforms and internal networks. The facility enables multilingual programming and flexible audio configurations while maintaining broadcast-level reliability. Standardized control rooms allow operators to move between environments seamlessly, and the IP backbone simplifies expansion and reconfiguration. By combining Grass Valley’s switching and orchestration technologies with SMPTE ST 2110 infrastructure, Walmart has created a scalable production ecosystem designed to support evolving communication requirements across its global workforce.
