Multiviewers

Where live stories are shaped, decisions are made and audiences connect.

A Multiviewer brings many signals together into a single, coherent view of an operation. It allows teams to see what content is present, verify quality, confirm that formats and graphics are correct and decide where attention is needed at any given moment.

In live production, master control and distributed environments, Multiviewers are where people stay grounded. They provide the visual context that allows operators, engineers and creatives to make confident decisions under pressure. Behind that clarity sits sophisticated signal handling, high-quality scaling, real-time probing and careful latency management, all designed to remove distraction rather than add it.

The Context We Are Operating In

Modern media operations operate across formats, locations and workflows that were never designed as a single system. SDI and IP coexist. HD and UHD run side by side. SDR and HDR need to be monitored consistently. Increasingly, signals originate as streams or cloud-native formats rather than traditional baseband.

At the same time, teams are more distributed than ever. People responsible for quality, continuity and creative decisions are not always physically present in the same control room, yet they still need a shared, reliable view of what is happening.

In this environment, Multiviewers are no longer just display tools. They are a core element in how confidence, consistency and situational awareness are maintained across an operation that is continuously evolving.

What This Enables in Real Operations

A well-designed Multiviewer reduces cognitive load at exactly the moments where clarity matters most.

Operators can instantly see which signals are active, whether images are correct and whether formats match expectations. Integrated probing provides immediate feedback on signal presence, audio status, black and freeze conditions and format compliance, allowing teams to detect issues before they escalate. Advanced scaling ensures that reduced-size images remain clean and artifact-free, preserving trust in what is being seen. Latency is kept to an absolute minimum so the multiview reflects reality rather than lagging behind it.

Behind the scenes, signal logistics are handled efficiently. Any signal, regardless of origin, can be routed to any multiview layout. Scaled representations and probed signals can be reused across multiple screens without redundant processing, keeping systems efficient while maintaining consistency.

For distributed teams, Multiviewers provide connection. Seeing the same images and status indicators creates a shared operational context, allowing people to focus confidently on their role even when they are remote from the core operation.

One Goal, Different Realizations, And How We Approach It

At Grass Valley, our goal with Multiviewers is simple and consistent: to give teams clear, trustworthy visibility across their entire operation, regardless of how signals are produced, transported or consumed.

That belief is reflected in a portfolio that spans high-performance hardware Multiviewers, fully virtualized Multiviewers enabled by AMPP OS and solutions where routing and multiviewing are unified into a single, highly efficient architecture.

By supporting these different realizations within one ecosystem, we help customers rethink how visibility fits into their operation without forcing them into a single model.

Understanding the Technologies Behind the Approaches

Multiviewing can be realized through different architectural approaches, each optimized for how signals move and how displays are consumed.

Hardware Multiviewing

Hardware Multiviewers are purpose-built systems designed to aggregate and display large numbers of SDI and IP signals with minimal latency. They support formats such as HD and UHD, SDR and HDR and IP standards including SMPTE ST 2110.

Advanced scaling algorithms preserve image quality even when many sources are displayed at reduced size. Integrated probing continuously validates signal presence, audio status and signal integrity, making hardware multiviewers a cornerstone of operational assurance.

These systems are typically deployed in control rooms, OB trucks and centralized facilities where density, determinism and predictable behavior are essential.

Virtualized Multiviewing

Virtualized Multiviewers operate in software and are designed for environments where signals exist as streams or are processed in cloud and hybrid workflows. Multiview layouts can be viewed on standard screens or directly in a web browser, extending visibility to distributed teams.

Signals do not need to originate in the virtualized domain. Using the ACE-card, a dedicated hardware interface that acts as a bidirectional bridge between SDI and IP infrastructures and virtualized environments, baseband signals can be brought into the software domain where multiviewing and probing are applied. This allows existing infrastructures to participate fully in cloud and hybrid workflows without architectural disruption.

Because these solutions run on AMPP OS, they scale elastically and adapt quickly as operational needs change, while supporting mixed formats side by side.

Unified Routing and Multiviewing

In some operations, routing and multiviewing are best treated as one integrated function. Because a router already connects all signals, integrating multiviewing and probing at this layer provides immediate visibility into everything that flows through the system.

This approach is particularly well suited for SDI-centric environments where simplicity, efficiency and cohesion are key and where monitoring is a natural extension of the routing architecture rather than a separate system.

Typical Characteristics at a Glance
